According to an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine ( N Engl J Med 347: 498-504.2002), adjusted neck circumference can be used to assess the probability of sleep apnea according to the following formula:

ANC= NC (cm) + H (4) + S (3) + C/G (3)

ANC: Adjusted neck circumferenc); NC: neck circumference in centimeter); H: hypertension; S: snoring; C/G: choking, gasping

The ANC is determined by adding to the neck circumference in centimeters 4 if there is a history of hypertension plus 3 if there is snoring plus 3 if there is choking and gasping.

Results:

* < 43: Low Probability of sleep apnea
* 43 - 48: Intermediate Probability of sleep apnea
* > 48: High Probability of sleep apnea
